Martin: Pennsylvanians’ ‘Yes’ Vote will Bring Communication, Collaboration and Transparency to Emergency Process

(HARRISBURG) – State Senator Scott Martin (R-13) today applauded Pennsylvania voters for voting yes on two amendments to the Pennsylvania Constitution in Tuesday’s Primary Election.

The two amendments to the Constitution were designed to improve the way the state responds to future emergencies. One limits an emergency declaration to 21 days unless the General Assembly approves a longer duration. The other clarifies that the governor will not be able to unilaterally veto legislative action that ends the declaration, as Governor Wolf has done.

Senator Martin, one of the authors of the amendments, issued the following statement:

“The people of Pennsylvania have spoken. Adopting these two constitutional amendments begins the process of restoring checks and balances to the decision-making process of how we as a state deal with long-term emergencies.

“Residents of this Commonwealth knew that a yes vote meant a return of communication, collaboration and transparency in the handling of future emergencies. We now will begin the steps to adopt a better way to handle emergencies that involves accountability and working together across all branches and levels of government.”
