Harrisburg – The Senate Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee approved two bills today authored by Sen. Scott Martin (R-13) that expand career training opportunities for cosmetology and barber students.
Senate Bills 1196 and 1197 amend the Barbers’ License Law and the Cosmetology Law, respectively, to allow enrolled students to earn course credit and gain experience working in local salons and barber shops. To qualify, the student must be supervised by a licensed professional and inform the client they are a student.
“This is a great opportunity for students, career technology centers (CTCs) and salon and barber shop owners,” Martin said. “Students gain practical knowledge in a real salon or shop setting while CTCs enhance their partnerships with local businesses, and salons and barber shop owners find and train perspective employees. It’s a win-win-win all around.”
The bills now move to the full Senate for consideration.
